Was very excited to get going with Electronauts.
Happy to say it's a rather crisp, altogether pleasant experience. It's effectively a reasonably deep remixing tool, so you can do quite a lot of re-arranging, adding and subtracting, take a section down to a kick and snare and jam over the top, or just let the tunes play out while you tweak to your heart's content, and everything in between. The sound is great, there's plenty of instruments and sounds and FX, and visually it's clear (on Pro) and crisp. Overall, then, totally worth the 13 quid I spent on it. Loads of tunes across a range of genres too. What does it lack?
Unless I'm missing something, there are some glaring omissions that need patching in. Please!Currently you can't select tunes by the instruments they let you use within them, so you're restricted to what each tune comes with. Further, I want to be able to load any instrument into any tune.It could really do with a jamming-from-scratch mode too, where you can just select a bpm and load some samples and instruments in and play whatever you like (maybe add scales too). The quantizing could do with selectable increments, for half beats, quarters, sixteenths, etc. Would be good to have a 'snip' truncating option on samples too, and how about the option to record a few seconds of audio in through the mic, then assign them to triggers?I know these things are not necessarily quick code edits, but they would elevate what is already a cool but limited experience into something musicians can get deep and dirty with. Yeah, buying both is one solution, the other being Electronauts being patched to pander to musicians.
I'll buy Track Lab too regardless, but EN has such a lovely and intuitive UI that I reckon it’s so close to what everyone wants. All of the groundwork is done; it's just a matter of making the functionality work across the whole package and tweaking some stuff - letting you record two bars rather than one, for example. It’s just the equivalent of MIDI data. I have immense fun with it already, so it’s by no means a deal breaker. They already have my money and I’m happy about that too.
Just a few ‘big picture’ ideas really. My guess/impression is that the reason these features aren't included is because Survios really wanted to capture a specific kind of experience for the 'every-player', that doesn't require advanced musical play. I agree with everything you said though, and I think there's a simple solution to this problem that would maintain Survios' vision while allowing for these more in depth possibilities -When you boot the game, the first thing you are presented with is a choice: 'Basic' or 'Advanced'. Basic is the current 'Electronauts', Advanced would have these more advanced tools.Possibly the first time you start the game it wouldn't give you a choice and just jump you right into Basic to make sure the average new user has a good experience. Yep, copyrights are all well and good, but I don't want to rip off other artists, I want to create my own stuff and share it around.Have to give a particular nod to the grenades, which are a great touch.I also want a drum pad set, so I can just tap my own beats out either along to the existing song or record my own.As for lengthening the sequencer, absolutely.
It's way too short to be musically expressive. I'd also like to see an option to change the time signature.Great start though. Let's hope it's viewed as that by the devs too. From a musical standpoint I agree with the changes to sequencer length, adjusting quantization, and being able to start from scratch.
From a gaming perspective I'd honestly just like to see you be able to seamlessly transition from track to track with no black out loading screen. It feels like you could really get into a groove and lose hours in the game if you could mix together a 'set' with some type of bridge sample or something. Obviously not every track can mix into every other because of BPM stuff but I'd love it even more if you could load your next track into a virtual 'deck' off to the side and mix it in.
